Chesapeake In The Know - It's Time To Prune!

February is actually a great month to get out and do some yard work, particularly pruning.

Most plants react well to pruning in February. Roses, grasses, perennials, and summer blooming plants would enjoy a nice trim right about now. Though there are a few exceptions. For example, apple and pear trees are subject to bacterial diseases this time of year so it’s best to leave them alone for now.

Before you head outside, get yourself some good tools and make sure they’re sharp and clean. When you’re done, bag small clippings in clear plastic bags and pile larger items by the curb.  Be sure to follow all bulk yard waste rules which you can find at CityofChesapeake.net/Bulk .

For more information on how to keep your yard growing all year round, visit the Chesapeake Master Gardeners’s website, www.CMGV.org , where you’ll find a helpful, detailed guide on pruning as well as information on classes and events that might just help even me grow a green thumb.
